Studying in West Lynn in high school, he averaged 23.6 points, 6.8 assists and 3.1 steals per game in his senior year. A four-star freshman in the ESPN rankings, he committed to Oregon in August 2015. In his sophomore year, Payton Pritchard averaged 14.5 points, 4.8 assists and 3.6 rebounds per game, and was named to the Pac-12 All-NBA Second Team. In his senior year, he was shortlisted for the Naismith Trophy, averaging 20.5 points, 5.5 assists and 4.3 rebounds per game.
