Obi Toppin is a native of Brooklyn and a graduate of Ossining High School in New York. After failing to receive an NCAA Division I invite, he played one season at Mount Zion Preparatory School in Maryland. As a freshman at the University of Dayton, Toppin was named Atlantic Ten Freshman of the Year. He had a breakout sophomore season, earning Atlantic 10 Player of the Year and National Collegiate Player of the Year honors. In 2020, Obi Toppin participated in the 2020 NBA Draft and was selected by the New York Knicks with the eighth overall pick.
Obi Toppin has enough height and weight at the power forward position, and because of his excellent explosiveness, he is very good one-on-one offense in the penalty area, able to score with and without the ball. As a power forward, he has the ability to shoot mid-range and has a good three-pointer feel. However, he lacks adaptability on the defensive end, is physically strong but not agile enough to limit star-level insiders.
