In his college career, Okpala studied at Stanford University. In the 2018-19 season (sophomore), he played 29 games and averaged 16.8 points, 5.7 rebounds and 2 assists in 32.7 minutes per game.
In June 2019, he participated in the NBA draft and was selected by the Suns in the 32nd round of the second round. He was then traded to the Heat and officially started his NBA career. However, his early career was not clear, and he suffered a strained Achilles tendon and missed many games. After recovering from injury, he was transferred to the Development League.
