He grew up in France because of his father’s career. As a child, Hayes played for French club Cholet and excelled at the beginning. He made his debut for Cholet’s senior team at the age of 16 before getting regular playing time the following season. Hayes won the 2017 FIBA U16 European Championship MVP title in Podgorica, Montenegro, averaging 16.6 points, 7 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game, and led the team to the gold medal. Won a silver medal at the 2018 FIBA Under-17 Basketball World Cup in Argentina and was named a top five All-Star, averaging 16.1 points, 3.6 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.7 steals per game.

In the 2019-20 season, Hayes signed a three-year contract with Ulm in Germany’s top league and participated in the European Cup. He played in 33 games in the European Cup, BBL and BBL-Pokal , averaging 11.6 points, 5.4 assists, 2.8 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game, and announced his participation in the NBA draft after the season ended.

In November 2020, Hayes was selected by the Detroit Pistons with the seventh pick and signed with the Pistons.

Hayes is a follower of modern basketball. He uses a lot of shots under the basket and beyond the three-point line. He won the gold medal in the European Championship and the silver medal in the FIBA Under-17 World Cup at a young age. This allowed him to gain a lot of experience in major competitions. What he needs to do is to infect the team more in series, in terms of defense and organization.
