He played for UCLA in college. After his freshman year, Rooney announced his participation in the 2015 NBA draft, and was finally selected by the Warriors with the 30th overall pick in the first round.
As a rookie of the Golden State Warriors, Rooney underwent double hip surgery after being selected, and his playing time was limited in his rookie season. The following season, Looney suffered another left hip strain, leaving him on the bench for much of the season to watch his teammates struggle in the Finals. Eventually healthy in 2017-18, he became a regular in the Warriors’ rotation as an undersized center and helped them win their second straight championship.
