Williams attended the University of Tennessee and was a Southeastern Conference player his freshman, sophomore and junior years. Won consecutive player of the year honors in the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons. After the season, Williams decided to enter the 2019 NBA Draft.
Williams is 2.01 meters tall, weighs 107 kilograms, has a wingspan of 2.08 meters, a standing reach of 2.65 meters, a standing jump of 0.66 meters, a running jump of 0.8 meters, and a body fat rate of 5.4%. The solid Williams is not afraid of any confrontation, and because of his size, Williams is a good choice in setting for teammates. An excellent off-ball screen player can save a lot of trouble for the ball holder. However, due to height issues, Williams can’t take advantage of the tall fours. In addition, Williams’ athletic ability is relatively poor. The most direct result of this is that the offensive and defensive ends may not be able to keep up with the rhythm of the current small ball era. He is also a player with obvious advantages and disadvantages.
Williams was selected by the Boston Celtics with the 22nd overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. On July 11, 2019, the Boston Celtics announced that Williams had signed a four-year, $11.8 million rookie contract.
