Bruno Fernando first played in Luanda, Angola, and then came to the United States to enter the University of Maryland during college. In the freshman season, he averaged 10.3 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game, and won the honor of the top ten freshmen. Following the season, Fernando declared for the 2018 NBA Draft, withdrew from the draft and returned to Maryland.
Bruno Fernando has a superior body and impressive mobility, strength and explosiveness. In the center position, Fernando is an excellent finisher, able to complete aerial work well, and has good jumping ability. As an all-round blue-collar, Fernando has outstanding coping ability in the low position. However, Fernando’s low-post offensive skills are relatively rough, and his movements and footsteps are stiff in singles; he is not well prepared when he is in the low post, and often forgets to squat down his center of gravity and falls into the trap set by the defender.
In the 2019 NBA draft, Fernando was selected by the Philadelphia 76ers with the 34th overall pick in the second round, becoming the first Angolan player selected for the NBA draft, and was subsequently traded to the Eagles. On August 7, 2021, Fernando was traded to the Boston Celtics in a three-team trade involving the Sacramento Kings.
